The vehicles driveshaft needs to be removed, once removed do:
- Measure to nearest 1/4" the length of your Driveshaft. Do this from "center" of rear u-joint cap to "center" of forward u-joint cap (example, 80-3/4").
- Measure to the nearest 1/8" across the rear weld yoke outside to outside at the u-joint caps (example, 4-1/8").
- Measure the rear u-joint cap diameters, "you must have a very accurate measurement". Your choices are 1.062/1-1/16" 1.125/1-1/8" 1.187/1-3/16". Some vehicles have (2) different cap
diameters
- Measure the front "slip yoke" from "u-joint cap "center" to "end" of slip yoke (example, 7-1/2").
- "Caliper Required" measure the outside diameter of the machined surface that slides into the transmission/transfer (example, 1.836).
- "Caliper Required" measure the slip yokes "major spline" diameter as close to 180 degrees across as possible (example, 1.621).
- Count the minor splines "carefully" and include any blanks (blind splines) in the final count as exampled. Example: 36 actual minor splines and
2 blanks, written as 36/38. Next example: 37 actual minor splines and 1 blank) written as 37/38. Below illustration designates a 36/38 count. If there are no blanks in
your slip yoke the count would be as an example, 38

H. & I. Vehicles utilizing Rear Flange Yoke |
If your aluminum driveshaft is attached to the differential by means of a "flange yoke" as pictured to the right,
You will need to follow the below instructions in order to glean the Bolt Circle, pilot male or female and diameter of
pilot. The use of a caliper will be absolutely required. These measurements are in thousands, not inches.
| |
 |
H. Simple way to retrieve an accurate "bolt circle" is to use the calipers inside blades.
Measure one of the flange bolt holes (example, .437 diameter). Now measure "diagonally" outside of one hole to the outside of an opposite hole
(example, 5.245). Subtract the hole diameter .437 from the overall width of 5.245. You now have an exact bolt circle of 4.808. The above
figures are examples only
I. With caliper measure pilot it's either male (measure o.d.) or female (measure i.d.).
